چکیده
A brief computational description of the Lin-Rood shallow water finite volume (SWfv) model is provided. Along side, salient features of the model are described. 4D-VAR data assimilation experiments using this model provided us avenues to study model error introduced by different high order advection schemes (such as van Leer and PPM) in the framework of 4D-variational data assimilation. This motivated us to derive the tangent linear model (TLM) and the adjoint model of the SWfv model. Details of the development of these models along with detailed description and flowcharts of the subroutines and results are provided in this technical document.

Adaptive Grids for Weather and Climate Models
An adaptive grid technique has been applied to a revised version of NCAR/NASA’s next generation dynamical core for climate and weather research. This hydrostatic so-called Lin-Rood dynamics package is based on a conservative and monotonic finite volume discretization in flux form. The adaptive model design utilizes a spherical adaptive-grid library which is based on a cache-efficient block-stru...

متن کاملBlock-structured adaptive meshes and reduced grids for atmospheric general circulation models.
Adaptive mesh refinement techniques offer a flexible framework for future variable-resolution climate and weather models since they can focus their computational mesh on certain geographical areas or atmospheric events. Adaptive meshes can also be used to coarsen a latitude-longitude grid in polar regions. This allows for the so-called reduced grid setups. A spherical, block-structured adaptive...
